Fishtown gets its name from its early roots as a shad fishing center along the Delaware River. The fishing industry and production have sustained Philadelphia neighborhood Floating until the mid-20th century, when industrialization and suburban flight drove people away from urban neighborhoods. and a working-class area with no workers. Hit hard by drug epidemics and crime, Fishtown has struggled with neglect and identity for decades. Early on, real estate developers – especially Roland Cassis – saw an opportunity for revival (not to mention a significant financial incentive). Fishtown has undergone even bigger changes as restaurants and artists have moved in. Then came the young professionals. Soon, the neighborhood’s urban excitement and reasonable rents began to attract Brooklynites.
Today, Pennsylvania’s creativity-fueled, hipster hub is home to some of the city’s best restaurants in addition to buzzing bars and nightlife venues. Beyond eating and drinking, visitors will find plenty to entertain—quirky shops, colorful street art, and a jam-packed events calendar. With its culture, cool factor and just enough wit to keep things interesting, it’s no wonder this gentle pocket of Philly is often compared to Williamsburg.
